A collision between an Amtrak train and an SUV occurred on Saturday in Andover, Massachusetts, resulting in an injury to one woman. The entire incident was captured on surveillance footage.
Andover police were dispatched to the scene at Pearson Street and Railroad Street at approximately 9:20 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered a BMW X1 with significant front-end damage.
The woman, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was transported to Lawrence General Hospital with minor injuries, according to the police report.
Amtrak confirmed that none of the passengers or crew members on the train suffered any injuries.
The surveillance video from a nearby business depicts the harrowing moments when the Amtrak train collided with the front of the SUV. It seems to show the driver crossing the tracks as the crossing arms began to descend. The driver then attempts to reverse, but the train ultimately impacts the vehicle.
Residents in the vicinity, who spoke to NBC10 Boston on Saturday evening, mentioned that although they didn't witness the moment of impact, they observed the aftermath and were relieved to learn that the driver's injuries were not severe.
One witness recounted, "I heard the train honking. It does that sometimes but lately it seemed like it's been more frequently and then I saw some police cars go by, so that's when I looked out the window and saw that the car had hit where the signal goes down. The entire engine was exposed, everything, it was just kind of compressed... It looked pretty bad."
