Queens, NY - In a harrowing incident on Tuesday, a dedicated crossing guard in Queens was struck by a vehicle while safeguarding children. The 63-year-old woman, who had been diligently ensuring the safety of the children, was hit from behind by a Mercedes.
The unfortunate event took place as she was escorting children from Our Lady of Hope Academy across Eliot Avenue near 71st Street. Prompt response from the FDNY saw them arrive at the scene just before 3 p.m. The injured crossing guard was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
The force of the collision caused the Mercedes to crash into a tree, deploying its airbags. Swift action from concerned residents followed, with Sam Patel recounting how he carefully turned her face upward and attempted to clear away the blood.
Residents of the area were quick to express their admiration for the crossing guard. Sam Patel remarked, "You can ask all of Middle Village, she is a nice, beautiful, sweet lady."
This tragic incident occurred on the border between Middle Village and Maspeth, and locals assert that this intersection has seen previous accidents. They place the blame on drivers, citing impatience and a failure to exercise caution on the road.
Peter Walus, a resident of 20 years, reflected on the dangerous nature of the intersection, revealing, "My parents almost got hit, I almost got hit with my kids crossing this street... We all knew this was going to happen."
According to the police, the crossing guard is currently in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery. Thankfully, no other injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
Residents in the area shared their heartfelt sentiments about the crossing guard. Michey Eberlein stated, "She was one of the most wonderful people you could ever meet... She was so kind to the children, courteous. She had a hard job here too."
