Vermont Corrections Department Inks New Contract for Out-of-State Inmate Housing

*Waterbury, VERMONT- The Vermont Department of Corrections (DOC) has entered into a new agreement for the housing of Vermont inmates outside the state.

DOC has finalized a $21 million, two-year contract with CoreCivic, the operator of the Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility in Mississippi, to accommodate up to 300 inmates.

Currently, CoreCivic detains 126 Vermonters within their facility.

In a statement, Commissioner of Corrections Nick Deml cited staffing constraints and limited space as factors necessitating the out-of-state housing. He emphasized, ”our correctional facilities do not have adequate space to house an additional 126 individuals without compromising the safety and wellbeing of our incarcerated population.”
