Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting and Standoff Unfold in New Castle

 


Newcastle, INDIANA - A tragic incident involving an officer-involved shooting and a tense standoff has left one man dead in eastern Indiana.


The Indiana State Police have reported that the incident transpired on Monday night on N. 29th St. in New Castle, situated to the east of Indianapolis.


Law enforcement authorities responded to a distress call regarding gunshots fired at a residence. Upon arrival, officers encircled the premises and endeavored to establish communication with those inside.


In accordance with an official statement from the Indiana State Police, negotiations proved successful in coaxing two individuals out of the dwelling without incident.


However, 59-year-old Donald Guffey Jr. barricaded himself within the residence, refusing all attempts at dialogue with the officers. This prompted the mobilization of city and county SWAT teams.


Negotiators persisted in their efforts to reach Guffey until he appeared at the front window brandishing a firearm, subsequently discharging it towards the officers, the statement reveals.


In response, two SWAT officers discharged their weapons, striking Guffey multiple times. Despite receiving immediate medical assistance from the responding police, Guffey was pronounced deceased at the scene.


The names of the involved officers, as per the Indiana State Police, will be disclosed at a later date. Authorities have affirmed that the investigation into this incident is currently underway and remains active.
