Inmate Jesse Goodchild's Passing Under Investigation at HRYCI


WILMINGTON, Delaware — The Delaware Department of Correction (DOC) has reported the passing of 44-year-old inmate Jesse Goodchild from Howard R. Young Correctional Institution (HRYCI) on Monday. Goodchild, a resident of Wilmington, was admitted into DOC custody on Thursday, September 28, 2023, on a Violation of Probation following a Robbery 1st Degree conviction.

On the morning of October 2, 2023, at approximately 8:55 a.m., Goodchild, who was alone in his intake unit cell, was discovered unresponsive during routine medical checks conducted by a Correctional Officer and a facility nurse. Immediate medical attention was initiated, with additional medical personnel and EMS paramedics joining in the efforts. Despite these measures, Goodchild was pronounced deceased by EMS paramedics at HRYCI at 9:41 a.m. on the same day.

Delaware State Police were notified and responded to HRYCI to conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances of Goodchild's passing. His body has been transferred to the Division of Forensic Science for a comprehensive determination of the cause of death.
