WASHINGTON — In a shocking incident, US Congressman Henry Cuellar, a Democrat representing Texas's 28th district, fell victim to a carjacking by three armed assailants in close proximity to the US Capitol building on Monday.
Cuellar's chief of staff issued a statement regarding the unsettling incident, stating, "As Congressman Cuellar was parking his car this evening, three armed assailants approached the congressman and stole his vehicle. Luckily, he was not harmed and is working with local law enforcement."
The carjacking unfolded around 9:30 p.m. in the Navy Yard area, situated approximately a mile from the US Capitol, as reported by the Washington Post. Subsequently, law enforcement managed to recover Cuellar's stolen vehicle.
Notably, this marks the second assault on a member of Congress within the Washington, D.C. area this year. In February, Democrat Angie Craig, a congresswoman representing Minnesota, endured an attack within her Washington apartment building. While she sustained bruises, her injuries were not of a serious nature.
Her chief of staff clarified that the attack did not appear to have a political motive, and an individual later pleaded guilty to assault.
